The animation below shows just how much Google’s Street View program has expanded over the years. We think of it as the foundation of the entire mapmaking process. Imagery is at the core of everything we do. Humans have only been able to see the planet from space for the last 50 years. This new feature can also serve as a digital timeline of recent history, like the reconstruction after the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Onagawa, Japan. Ethan Russell, a director of product at Google Maps said: Earth View is a collection of thousands of the most striking landscapes found in Google Earth. Now with Street View, you can see a landmark's growth from the ground up, like the Freedom Tower in New York City or the 2014 World Cup Stadium in Fortaleza, Brazil. A custom map can be as simple as a street map of a given location, or include sophisticated. In terms of where people actually live, that percentage stands at a whopping 98% leaving only a few areas of the planet unaccessible on Google Earth.
